About Us
This project began with a gifted 3D-printer and a handful of moss gathered from a forest in East Tennessee. The first three maps: the city where I grew up, the city where I went to university, and the city where I live. I called each "home" at one point or another, and all had taught me something - or many somethings - about myself. I wanted a way to orient myself to these places even when they were out of sight, so I looked to a centuries-old solution: maps.
When I 3D printed these first maps, something was missing. Architects and designers say that one of the keys to an inviting space is "bringing the outside in." Incorporating natural elements - plants, flowers, natural light - tends to make us feel more comfortable. I incorporated moss into my maps to give the appearance that they had started growing a life of their own. When I showed my coworkers, they asked for a mossy map of their hometown. I made a simple website for this first order, and Highground was born.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to the privilege of helping map your world.
